What Is Food Safety?

Everyone who handles, prepares, serves or sells food has a responsibility to maintain high standards of hygiene and cleanliness in order to prevent illness or even death to the customer. If you handle consumer food, you must adhere to hygiene regulations and introduce practices that ensure the food handling process is risk free.

Understanding Food And Safety

Whenever food is handled, good food hygiene practices must be followed.

These include:

Protection – All food must be protected from contamination.
Prevention – Reducing the opportunity for harmful bacteria to multiply.
Destruction – Harmful bacteria food products that are not fit for human consumption must be destroyed.

Food Poisoning

When food that is not fit for human consumption is eaten, it can cause food poisoning. While most cases of food poisoning are caused by harmful bacteria, food contents such as chemicals also pose a risk. Thousands of people suffer (and in some instances even die) from the effects of food poisoning every year in the UK alone.
